I’d prefer a bagless one with a washable filter, but those aren’t totally necessary if it’s a good one. What’s a good vacuum cleaner and what price range would I be looking at?

Dyson, $350.00 to $550.00.
Bissels are also good. They can be cheap though in quality.
Rainbows are overpriced pieces of crap.
I don’t know if they make a bagless one or not, but check out the Orecks, light and very good pickup.
They range in price depending on accessories and ease of use. You can get a good one w/attachments on board for under $100. Hoover is a good brand. Mine is an upright, has Hepa filter, attachments on board (hose & various nozzles) and a light in the front. Raises up for thick carpet or down for floors. Has good suction. Takes regular bags. I’ve had it more than 10 years and it’s still going strong. Haven’t had to replace belt or anything. I priced them the other day at WalMart, still under $100. I have owned a very expensive Kirby. Wasn’t worth it. It did have multiple accessories such as a sander, blower, etc. Which I never used. I’d never pay a lot for a vacuum again. Price range: under $100 to well over a $1000. There are some great, ez clean vacuums, cannister you empty and wash, have hepa filtration for about $500. A British company has come out with a brand with wheels that turn in all directions for ease in use and has great suction. guess it depends on what you want to spend and how you’ll be using it.
I also wanted to add, the Hoover is lightweight and self-propelled which I love. The Kirby was very heavy and even though it did a good job, it wore me out because it was heavy and hard to maneuver.
I like my Oreck. I wouldn’t have a Kirby.
I wouldn’t trade my Vacuum Robot for anything else.. it’s great. If you’re in Australia I’m able to send it to you for free.
