I’ve rescued a large terrier mix dog (about 55 lbs.), and she’s just finished her heart worm treatment. One of the symptoms of heart worms is dry brittle hair and heavy shedding, not to mention that this is spring so she’s going to be shedding her winter coat anyway.
So there is a Ridiculous amount of hair shedding around from her. I’m brushing her every day and she’s getting groomed on friday with a de-shedding blow out treatment. But in the meantime our brand new bagless vacuum is getting clogged constantly and is just so useless at picking up hair. Is there a brand/kind of vacuum that’s great for people with heavily shedding dogs?
The vacuum we currently have (dunno what brand) but its a bagless and I HATE that! Every time I clean it no matter how careful I am my eyes go red itchy and runny, including my nose, and I get a headache from all the dust that gets in the air and on my hands when I clean it. Even if I use a face mask and gloves (have!) my eyes still get horribly irritated. I was hoping there was a bag-vacuum that was really good with pet hair?
Boy, do I understand where you’re coming from!
We went through the same thing — and I was burning up the motors in bagless vacuums about every 4 months. But vacuums with bags made no sense either, since we have so much fur (2 goldens and 2 persian cats).
I finally called and asked my vet what she uses. The Dyson D15 Animal. Yep, it cost a lot, but it’s worth every penny. I couldn’t function without it anymore – that thing will suck the spots off a dalmation, and it never seems to slow down (we’ve had it over a year now).
I have a german shepherd who sheds alot also so I bought the Dyson pet vacuum. It was expensive but I’ll tell you, it’s the best vacuum I’ve ever had. Easy to clean, and as the advertisement says, it doesn’t lose suction. Good buy!
hoover windtunnel
(worked for my heavily shedding austrailian shepard) but dont forget u got to go between each use adn clean the roller brush so it doesnt berak from the hair and also change the bag when its half full. also have to remove hair clogs from time to time
my wife has a Dyson and swears by it. We have a Golden Retriever that looses a bit of fur as well as a lot of tiles. Also, I have asthma so we went that way
I have been through a lot of different vacs, in a desperate search for one that will help get up pet hair. I have 2 dogs that shed like crazy, and the best vac I have found is the Eureka Boss SmartVac. It has worked really well for me….no clogs, no broken belts, and great suction. Most of my vacs would lose effectiveness in less than one year, but I’ve had this one for more than a year now.
Also, it rated at the top (well above dyson) of Consumer Reports.
wear swimming goggles when emptying it,
together with the mask?
I have an Oreck. Although it does have a bag which I have to change regularly, I really like it. Seems to get all the hair and keep it inside the bag.

I just bought a Kirby a few months ago and the change in my house is amazing! I have two cats and two golden retrievers and it has helped with the hair floating around.
THE DYSON!!
I would love to find a vaccum that I don’t have to clean off the rollar!!!
I only have a few rug areas but would like to use it on the hardwood as well.
"SANITAIRE" is the best, gets every bit of hair up! I have a solid white siberian who sheds year round and a white cat that sheds too and this vaccum gets every bit of hair up, you wouldnt know an animal lived there.
I have a Dirt Devil that is also bagless. When I bought it, I used it on a rug that had a years worth (of what my other vacuum couldn’t remove) of dog hair. It made the rug look like new. No more white hair on the black part of the rug. I’m not sure which model it is, but it has a rating of 12 amps. So even if you don’t get a Dirt Devil, I believe the higher the amps the heavier the vacuum is.
Also, make sure that any vacuum that you buy has a HEPA filter. It’s great to keep your allergies down.
I have allergies also, & have had trouble when I handle cleaning my vacuum. I always clean my vacuum canister outside so that any dust will blow away in the wind (check wind direction). I open my canister, and dump filter & all into a plastic bag. A shopping bag or something bigger works great. I grab the top of the bag & shake the filter loose from the dirt & hair in the bag. Let the dust settle in the bag then pull the filter out & put it in another bag. I hold the top of the bag & bang the filter against the side of the porch. When I’m done, I wait for the dust to settle in the bag, then I pull the filter out, & put it back into the vacuum. I then tie up the bags & dispose of them. Then all you have to do is wash your hands thoroughly & you’re ready to go.
