I know you get what you pay for, but I’ve about had it with my Dirt Devil. I’d like a vacuum that’s preferably bagless, but I’d rather buy cheap bags then have a filter I need to replace every other month, or make a mess knocking it against the side of a trashcan. The Dirt Devil has awful suction and the hose always comes out when I’m vacuuming. It’s safe to say I won’t be buying any more of their products (this is the second one I had).
I want it to have a normal beater bar, as well as a hose attachment system. Any ideas? Please no irrelevant spam or lectures on how I should pay several hundred dollars for a Dyson. Thanks!

The hoover elite rewind is the best vacuum I have ever owned. The cord keeper is great. I got mine for $80 a few years ago.
A few months ago, I found a Bissel Upright bagless on special for about $50. I’ve been pleased with it so far, though I do have to remember to clean out the filters now and then.
Good luck!
Eureka Optima. I’ve had one for 5 years, and I bought a second one last year so it would be handy
in the basement. It’s bagless, and you can wash out the filter. I scrape out the dirt from the folds in in the filter with a plastic fork, run it under water thoroughly then let it dry 24 hours. Best to do this when you are through vacuuming, so it will be ready to go next time you need it. I think it ran around 64 bucks. I bought one at Sam’s Club and the second one from QVC. I just saw it at Target. Mine are green, but the one at Target was yellow. I ordered 4 new filters from Eureka.com, and they were yellow.
I love my Vax because of the wet option … perhaps look at a second hand one. I am onto my second Vax now after 15 years and the other is used in the shed for cleaning the car, so it is still going strong.

I would agree with some of the other answers regarding the Hoover Tempo widepath. While it is a highly recommended model, be aware of some things that it will not do. I would caution that this model when the vac is turned on the beater bar is always on, even in the upright position (such as when you are using the hose accessories). This is one thing to consider about your particular vacuuming needs. Also, this model does not include the extra reach hose (a rubber stretch hose) for attachments. It comes only with a stiffer plastic hose. Also this is a bag model. Shop around to actually "test drive" models to see which one might be right for you. Typically the "big box stores" don’t have an on site service dept. to answer tech questions. I would recommend an independent dealer would be a great starting point.
Good Luck
