i dont know how, but i guess i must have trashed the filter when i was cleaning the container out.. anyways, is it ok to vacuum without the filter? will it still work? or do i need to get another filter from a vac. store?

You need the filter in any vacuum. Without one the dust just sucks through and is thrown out into the room, besides which some dust gets in the fan assembly and eventually causes the motor to fail.
