You probably need a new belt. It would also do some good to clean the brushes on the bottom of it too. If after this you still smell the burning, it is probably the motor, you could take it in to an appliance repair, or buy a new one.
Could be the air intake vents are blocked with dust, or could be the bushes burning out. Try removing the filter cloth from the vents and wash in soapy water, if not it is probably the Bushes. You need to take it to a repairer.
It could be that everything dirt devil makes is a piece of $hit. Everything I’ve owned from that company sucks.
I suggest paying the extra hundred bucks and buying an oreck vacuum. They are made in America, and they make the best vacuums I’ve used as far as ease of use, suction, and being very light.
There might be something stuck underneath, which might be stopping the brush from going around..That would make a burning smell.. Maybe the rubber belt, is loose, and could cause a "rubber" burning smell, sometimes, you just need to change the belt..or, the motor might be burning out, that would be like an "electrical" burning smell..In any case, don’t use it, could cause a fire..I hope I helped..Good Luck..
