This lightweight and powerful vacuum cleaner takes up very little of the valuable space in your home, but with its variable speed motor it does quite an effective job. It’s also fairly economically priced at about $130 or less at the time of this writing. It comes with all the attachments one would expect with any good vacuum and most of them can be conveniently stored on the handle. Dirt is stored in a disposable bag. The power cord can be retracted at the touch of a button. The large power button can be easily activated with your foot to save bending down. A quality and versatile item at an affordable price.

I want to start with an issue that others have complained about because it was not one for us: suction. It was – and has been – sufficient for us. I will continue to monitor that and provide updates if needed. But all I can do is give my experiences after using this in varied situations and on different surfaces and furniture.

I am very picky about vacuums and have gone through many which didn’t hold up over time. So I tested this one repeatedly before writing this review – on bare floors (wood and laminate), carpet (shag and low pile), blinds, sofas, and chairs. I also tested the crevice tool extensively. Jump past the next paragraph (although the info could be helpful) if you want immediate descriptions of vacuum assembly and features – the paragraph directly below gives a summary of our home size and flooring materials, lifestyle, etc. It could be a good basis for comparison with yours.

Here is a brief description of our lifestyle, floor and upholstery surfaces, and home size: busy family, live in a city with four seasons, a moderate amount of dirt, mud, leaves and snow tracked into our home (depending on the season), mostly hardwood or laminate flooring, relatively little carpet. No pets. Snow in winter, mud during gardening season, typical teen running around who doesn’t always pick up crumbs or pieces of paper. We don’t live in an apartment but a 2-story home. Casual lifestyle but we care about having clean, attractive rooms which are company ready.

This canister vacuum is perfect for our lifestyle and sufficient to clean the space in our home. We already have an upright that we use on the first floor but it is VERY convenient to have the Turbo Canister Dirt Devil upstairs…and actually, I often grab it to take downstairs as well.

Let’s start with the ease of assembly: a snap. We simply took out all the parts: turbo and crevice tools, dusting brush, smaller turbo brush for light floor and upholstery cleaning, suction nozzle, etc. Then we laid them out on a counter. The product literature clearly illustrates each part and how to add them to the vacuum so we followed the directions. No problem there and the vacuum was up and running in a few minutes.

Then we started testing the vacuum in action. It did an impressive job of getting any stray bits of paper, dirt, crumbs, and other items off the floor, sofas, and chairs. We also used it to clean the tracks in our sliding glass doors and to dust. Again, very impressive, especially at this price. It has continued to perform well.

Two features we especially like and don’t have on other vacuums: a retractable cord and an adjustable power control. There are also dedicated holders on the vacuum for the crevice and turbo tool as well as the dusting brush. This keeps these tools handy and with the vacuum.

I do wish the cord were a bit longer but this is such a minor thing. It is plenty long enough to handle our largest rooms and the retractable power cord completely eliminates the frustration of winding cords or trying to unwind tangled ones. Once retracted, only the plug is visible but it doesn’t actually stick out or become an impediment.

A sturdy handle makes it simple to move the Dirt Devil from room to room. Is it the lightest canister vacuum on the market? No, but certainly more convenient and easy to carry than our upright and much less hazardous on stairs. It also has more suction than the smaller canister vacuums I’ve used. We store it on the floor of our linen closet so it shouldn’t take up much space in any home or apartment.

As with all my vacuums, I try to use common sense and pick up larger pieces of dirt, food and paper before using the vacuum to get the rest. After all, EVERY vacuum has maximum opening sizes and can be clogged if care isn’t taken to avoid that.

So far, we are very pleased with the Dirt Devil Turbo Canister Vacuum.
