Spot clean with Simple Solution, they sell this in Pet stores. Then follow up with carpet cleaner. Steam cleaning after the simple solution is easier. I have two new puppies and trust me this stuff works! For the really tough spots we used Resolve.

I use a Bissell Proheat 2X which costs about $ 199 at Target or Walmart. I think Bestbuy sells them for about $ 20 less. You can purchase special pet cleaner which did well on my carpet stains from the dog when he was sick. It is easy to use and lift for a women. If you would like to just rent a cleaner, I find that RugDoctors work very well too. However, they are heavy and you might need help loading and unloading the machine from your car. You can rent RugDoctors at your local grocery store. The cleaner should also be available for purchase at the same location. The cost to rent a RugDoctor runs about $ 20-25 for a 24 hour period.
You don’t need a heavy duty cleaner to clean up after a puppy. If you notice it right away any light detergent or general cleaner will work. The odor will need to be treated separately with something that will biodegrade the urine salts. Cleaning alone will not be enough. Most any home steam cleaning or carpet cleaning machine will work to clean it but the odor needs to be broken down. You really need to flush it out with some water. If the spot has been there for more then a half hour you need to neutralize the PH in the urine. You can do that by mixing 1 oz of white vinegar to a cup of water and spray it and let it sit for 5 minutes before cleaning. You can find more detailed instructions on airfresh.com under the cleaning tips link. Again… most home carpet cleaning machines work pretty well for spot cleanings. I wouldn’t recommend them for cleaning entire rooms that are heavily soiled but they work pretty well for spot removals.
I totally love my bissell little pet deep cleaner. it is one of those set it and forget it deals. fill it with solution and push a button and walk away. it beeps when done, or use it manually.
they are about 120$ or so, you can get them at walmart, linens and things etc. You do need to get the bissell formulas thought.
it weights about 10 pounds. it also works on upholstry….
