What is a good, affordable vacuum cleaner?

2

I am looking for a good and affordable vacuum cleaner. I have 2 cats, 1 dog, a baby, and a husband (any guess who makes the biggest mess :)) so it has to have some good suction. I have a bissel pet hair earaser and it is a hunk of junk, clogs all of the time and barely picks anything up anymore. I am looking for advice on: brand, bag, bagless, canister, and model. I just don’t want to get another vacuum cleaner that is going to give out on me in less than a year again!

  1. I agree with you about the Bissell … I had one and found it worthless, too. Another one to avoid is the Dirt Devil upright … that one was even worse than the Bissell (emptying the dirt canister required plunging my arms in up past the elbow … yuck!)

The one I have right now is the Hoover Legacy Pet Vac Rewind, although I don’t think it’s still being made … you may still be able to find it in stores (pretty sure I got mine at Wal*Mart). Works a LOT better than any other vacuum I’ve owned in years. Don’t remember what I paid but surely not much over $100, if that.

I’ve read and heard that Dyson is well worth the price if you don’t mind dropping $400 or more at once … apparently they keep working well long after the others have given out.

I have 2 kids, 3 dogs, and yep … a husband and I KNOW who makes the biggest mess! I’ve pretty much resigned myself to replacing the vacuum every year or so, but over the years I’ve been more satisfied with Hoover than any of the other brands I’ve tried.
