Why does my Upright Bagless Vacuum Cleaner always shuts itself off

2

I have an Upright Bagless Vacuum Cleaner that always shuts itself off after running for 5-20 minutes or so. I am unable to turn it on, but if I let the vacuum rest for 20 minutes or so it works again. I think it might be overheating and is automatically shutting itself off. The vacuum appears to work perfectly aside from this problem. Any ideas?

  1. Safety shut off switch inside the motor. This trips temporarily to stop the power getting to the motor and prevents your vacuum cleaner bursting into flames.

  2. I bought a brand new one, and it kept doing that to me. I think because there were SO MANY filters on it Hepa, etc. I took it back, but I found that that carpet fibers kept clogging it up. Have you taken it apart yet? There more than likely is something either in the hose or the entrance to the debris container that is preventing all of the dirt from getting into the canister. I have found leaves, toothpicks, bobby pins, clothing tags or just a really big hair ball in mine! I have three teenagers whom also use the same vac!!
It is a safety device that prevents the vacuum motor from "burning up".Check the hose and blow through it, to see if all your air comes out the other side( it’s a crappy job, but somebody has to do it)LOL If the hose is clear, then check the area of the hose that goes into the canister, sometimes this becomes clogged.
How is your hose attachment working? If there is plenty of suction then you need to open the canister that collects the dirt and go outside and unscrew the bottom portion of the canister (you didn’t mention what specific brand of vacuum it was) if there is a foam filter around the bottom part you unscrewed, remove it and shake the heck out of it! (the foamy thing)Against your hand, a tree whatever. I usually shake mine about 20 times. If you have the type with the "paper filter" then remove it, tap it and blow it off. I find that just emptying the canister is not enough. You have to clean the filters too. In a household of 5, I am the only one who cleans the filters. So when I start to lose suction after, maybe 3 uses, I shake, clean and blow all filters. Please let us know. 🙂
